Surrounded by the city of Los Angeles in Western Los Angeles County is the beautiful 5-aquare mile Culver City. Having been home to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, one of the most successful motion picture studios since the early 20th Century, Culver City has been a significant motion picture and TV production center. History of Culver City

The earliest known occupants of the land now known as Culver City are the Tongva-Gabrielino Native Americans who called the area home for over eight millennia. The city itself was established on the ranches, i.e. Rancho La Barllona, Rancho La Cienega o Paso de la Tijera, and Rancho Rincon de los Bueyes.

During the American Civil War in the early 1860’s, the 1st California Infantry set up Camp Latham on Rancho Ballona for training Union troops and staging their Southern California operations.

In 1913, Harry Culver, a real estate developer, attempted to establish the city unsuccessfully. Finally, on 20th Sept., 1917, Culver City was incorporated as an all-white planned community. The first Motion Picture studios were built by Thomas H. Ince and his Triangle Motion Picture Company in 1918 and these later became the legendary MGM studios. In 1950, the city had one of Southern California’s earliest shopping malls, which was a post Second World War war project.

Culver City Art District

At the La Cienega – Washington intersection on the eastern side of the city lies the Culver City Art District. There has been a recent rebirth of the art district with an influx of new restaurants and more than 30 art galleries. This has become a popular area for art lovers especially with the pedestrian-friendly streets that allow for strolling and window-shopping.

Museums

Apart from the art district, there are a number of art establishments in the city. The Culver City Public Theatre is one of them. The 317-seater Kirk Douglas Theatre owned by the Center Theatre Group is another theatre of interest. The Mayme A. Clayton Library and Museum (MCLM) offer a wide collection of memorabilia on the history and culture of African Americans. The Wende Museum displays a wide collection of East European and the former East Germany’s objects and memorabilia. It acts as an archive and educational institution on the cold war era.

Parks and Recreation

Culver City has many allocations for rest and recreation. For instance, the Culver City Park has quite a wide range of facilities which include a skate park, a dog park, picnic areas, recreation huts, playgrounds, moonbounces, barbeques, a Skateboard Park, 3 softball diamonds, and an interpretive nature trail. Other parks include Syd Kronethal Park, Veteran’s park, Tellefson Park, Fox Hills Park, Blanco park, Carlson Park, and Blair Hills park among others.

The Culver Boulevard Median bicycle path running from Huron Avenue to Braddock Drive offers cycling and pedestrian paths and is also wheelchair accessible. The Ballona Creek bicycle path is also accessible when you get to McConell Avenue. The Culver Ice Arena offers ice skating amenities to the public.

Surrounded by the L.A neighborhoods of West L.A, Palms, and Mar Vista on its northern side, Ladera Heights and Baldwin Hills on the East, Westchester on the southern end, and Playa Vista and Venice to its West is Culver City, Ca.
